Character Name: William Green
Country: New Zealand
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Camp guide or teen?: Camp guide
Appearance:
William is roughly 5'9" tall, and weighs about 80kg. He also has dark brown hair, and green eyes. One of the first things people notice about William is the spiral curls on either side of his head. He's tried everything over the years to straighten them out, but after a few seconds his hair always curls up again. Eventually he gave up and accepted that the curls were there to stay. One of the other things people notice about William is his eyebrows which are thicker than average. He doesn't try to shave or pluck them or anything since he reckons it's not worth the effort, and besides, what if he stuffed up the line or the shape?
William is also reasonably fit thanks to working on his parents's farm, and is average in size. He doesn't really worry about fashion and dresses for comfort rather than style. You're more likely to find him in shorts and a T-shirt than wearing a suit.
Personality:
At first glance, William seems like a very kind and friendly guy. He likes to have a laugh and spend time with family and friends, is not afraid of/allergic to hard work, and is willing to help out almost anyone who asks. He doesn't tend to ask for help when he needs it as he feels like asking for help is a weakness. It isn't, of course, but feel free to try to convince him of that.
He tends to take a relaxed approach to life, tries to avoid conflict, and tries not to worry about what he can't control. Sometimes this makes him look like he doesn't take life seriously, but that couldn't be further from the truth! If something is important enough he will stand up and argue for as long as it takes to get his point across and hopefully the other person will see things his way.
His family and friends are very important to him, and he's very protective of them. That protective streak also extends to anyone he sees being bullied. This has earned him enemies in the past, but he figures that it just comes with the territory. He also has a strong sense of justice especially on the sports field. It infuriates him when his opponents cheat and get away with it as he's very competitive and although he says he plays for fun, he really does want to win as well.
He does have a temper, but he only loses it if he's pushed far enough. He also has a tendency to be very blunt which is good in some ways because you know he speaks his mind and is fairly honest. Unfortunately it also means he can offend people by accident sometimes and he's very apologetic when he does. He's quite stubborn too, and it's often difficult to get him to do things he doesn't want to do, admit he's wrong, and so on.
Likes:
- Family: He loves his family, and will do almost anything for them.
- Sport: William likes sports of all kinds, and has a soft spot for rugby. He won't admit it but he does like American Football as well and knows more about the sport than he lets on.
- Swimming/ The Beach: He loves going swimming, and spending time at the beach with family and friends.
- Fishing: He loves going fishing, and he and his Dad used to go fishing a lot when he was younger.
- Animals: He grew up on a farm so he's always had animals around him, and his family kept a sheep as a pet.
- Music: He loves listening to music, especially rock music. Back when he was a student he'd listen to music while he was studying.
- Sweet Things/Desserts: William likes eating sweet things, and is especially partial to pavlova.
- Beer: He started drinking beer when he was a student and never looked back. He's not an alcoholic or anything, but he likes to have one every so often to relax.
Dislikes:
- Bullies: He hates seeing people being bullied, and tries to stop it from happening. This has the unfortunate effect of making him a target, but yeah.
- Losing: William is very competitive, and he hates to lose at anything. He isn't a sore loser though, and will just try even harder to win next time.
- Cheaters: He hates it when people cheat at anything, and even more so if their cheating affects him personally.
- Formal clothing: He hates having to wear suits, and only wears them when he has to. He'd much rather dress casually.
- People taking credit for his work/achievements: He likes to be recognised for what he does and does well, and hates it when other people try to take the credit for the things he does.
- Freeloaders/People who don't pull their own weight: He finds it infuriating when he has to do all the work to get things done because no one else will do their share of the work.
- People who disrespect other people: He believes everyone deserves to be treated fairly regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or status.
Fears:
- Something bad happening to his loved ones: This is one of his worst fears because he loves his family and friends and wants them to be happy and safe. He also worries about this because if something does happen to them he won't be there to help.
- Being sent home for some reason: William has been looking forward to working at the summer camp for months, and he doesn't want anything to happen (e.g. sickness, serious injury, family emergencies back home, etc.) that means he would have to go home before the camp is over.
- Poisonous creatures: Because New Zealand doesn't have any poisonous species William is understandably nervous about the risk of encountering a poisonous animal even though the risk would be low.
History:
William was born in a hospital in the Waikato, and his parents were both farmers living near a small town. As soon as they decided he was old enough to help he had to help out with looking after the animals, and when he got older he had to fit helping on the farm around his school-work. His life was fairly uneventful until he was 18 and moved to Auckland to attend university.
Living in Auckland was something of a culture shock for William compared to life in the country. There were so many cars and people to get used to, and so much noise! He moved into a house with other students from his classes, and in addition to working hard on his studies he discovered beer. His Dad had never let him drink beer back home, and he said that William wasn't old enough for beer, but none of his house-mates here cared about that. He soon learned how to juggle course work and beer drinking, and gained a Bachelor of Arts at the end of his studying.
After a round of unsuccessful job-hunting, he returned home to work on his parents's farm again, and one day he saw an ad for working in US summer camps on your OE (Overseas Experience) and applied. He liked the idea of working somewhere warm in winter, and fortunately he was accepted right away for Camp Fox.
Journal Sample:
July 18th, 2011.
Broke up a fight today between two of the campers! Apparently one wanted to shave off the other's eyebrows reckoning he'd look better without them. The guy's eyebrows are similar to mine, and there's nothing wrong with having eyebrows that are thicker than average! I ended up confiscating a razor from the boy that wanted to shave the other one. Blond guy, I forget his name. Aside from that nothing too exciting happened today. It's time for lights out and making sure the campers are in their rooms, so I'm signing off!
Roleplay Sample:
"William. Are you sure you've got everything?" William sighed but endured his Mum's fussing over him. It was his first time leaving New Zealand so it's only natural that she'd worry.
"I'm sure, Mum." William said, and half-wished the call to board the plane would happen sooner. It was still a good 20 minutes away. "You made sure I packed everything! Clothes, bathroom stuff, stuff to do, insect repellent..."
"Stop fussing, Dear." William's Dad said. "William will be fine overseas. Make sure to email regularly so your Mother doesn't worry."
William looked at his Dad, and knew his suggestion for email was so both he and his Mum wouldn't worry about him while he was away. They were worried enough when he moved to Auckland to go to university so he wondered how they'd handle him going to the States for a couple of months.
"Mum, Dad, it'll all be fine. I'll be gone for a couple of months, and then I'll be home! The time will fly by." William was still waiting to hear that boarding call for his flight. When that happens, it'll be up, up, and away to a new country!
"Flight 110 to Los Angeles is now boarding. All passengers please make your way to the terminal now to board." William hugged his parents, and picked up his carry-on bag. He'd already checked in his other suitcase when they arrived at the airport.
"Have a safe trip home, and I'll see you in a couple of months!" William turned away and entered the passengers-only area of the airport. It'd be good for his parents to get used to him being away like this, and he was looking forward to getting to the camp and meeting everyone. He reached the terminal and handed in his boarding pass to get on the plane. Finally, he was off to America!
